“I wouldn’t say that,” Les answered.

“Don’t be modest, lad. Bruce says he’d bet on you riding against anybody in the service. That’s quite a compliment from a stick-in-the-mud like him. But jumping over hedges and riding on the parade ground is child’s play compared to a full charge with sabres set in the ready position. I can’t explain the thrill when the swishing blade cuts through meat like butter and the thundering chargers’ hooves are kicking up mud and blood. It’s enough to make a rookie fill his pants. By the look of you, you’d be one of those,” Alcott said, with the vein in his neck bulging.

“You tell him, Alcott,” Ellis said.

Corporals Alcott and Ellis spent their off-time visiting an Indian woman who had set up a tipi on the edge of town and started her own business.

“Cheap prices because she has hardly any overhead,” Ellis said. “On slow days we’ve negotiated her down to two for the price of one. How’s that for a bargain?”
